For the second year in a row, Samsung Electronics ranked second place in the world semiconductor market, following the U.S. firm Intel Corp.
ISuppli, a market research firm, said in a report on Monday that the Korean company recorded US$9.5 billion in sales this year, up 8.7 percent from last year, occupying 5.3 percent of the global semiconductor market.
Samsung rose to the No. 2 position for the first time last year. This year, the company¡¯s memory chips were on top of the market, but the firm was relatively weak in the non-memory field.
In comparison, Intel recorded US$26.7 billion in sales, up 12.7 percent from last year.
Renesas Technology, which was established last April in a joint venture between Japan¡¯s Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric, jumped to third place by registering US$7.9 billion in sales.
Toshiba came in next, in fourth place, Texas Instruments in fifth, Infineon Technologies sixth and ST Microelectronics, seventh. Others in the top 10 list included NEC, Philips and Motorola.
In a separate report, iSuppi also said that the world semiconductor market grew by 13.9 percent this year, and would grow by more than 17 percent next year.
