The independent counsel bill that President Roh Moo-hyun said he would veto is to be resubmitted for a vote during the National Assembly¡¯s regular session this week.
National Assembly speaker Park Kwan-yong said that if the four political parties do not come to an agreement by Tuesday, he would use his authority to arrange a unilateral session and submit the bill the next day if necessary. Park said that he would postpone the session until Friday, if the parties are willing to agree to another vote.
Since the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) and the United Liberal Democrats (ULD) have made clear their decision to support a reconsideration of the bill, the bill is likely to pass the National Assembly with more than 182 votes, a majority greater than two-thirds.
In relation, MDP chief Chough Soon-hyung met with Choe Byung-yul, the head of the Grand National Party (GNP), and said that he would once again assemble MDP party members to support the second vote. Choe replied that if the parties agree on the vote, the bill must pass the assembly.
The GNP has reportedly scheduled an emergency party meeting to discuss the vote.
