The main opposition Grand National Party (GNP) Friday indicated its willingness to override a presidential veto on an independent counsel bill, if other opposition parties join forces.
"The Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) has already announced its intention to go ahead with another vote to override the presidential veto, and the new leadership is ready to inherit the party line. The United Liberal Democrats (ULD) should also declare its official position on the issue," said GNP secretary-general Hong Sa-duk.
Another GNP official said that considering the old age of GNP leader Choe Byung-ryul, many party members believe that he should not continue his hunger strike for more than 10 days. Choi is currently on a hunger strike to protest the presidential veto.
Meanwhile, Kim Hak-won, the secretary-general of the United Liberal Democratic Parts (ULD), opened the possibility of the party's cooperation with the GNP and MDP, saying, "Official party lines for the ULD are usually determined through free votes. But if the National Assembly decides to convene a general meeting for the second vote, we will hold a meeting of lawmakers and collect opinions. If possible, we intend to make clear our position on the issue, whether in support or opposition."
National Assembly speaker Park Kwan-yong plans to meet with the floor leaders of the four major parties on December 1, and discuss ways to break through the parliamentary gridlock.
