Special audits and inspections lasting three weeks on two national organizations and three national projects are to start on December 8. The targets of the audits are the state-funded broadcaster, KBS, the Korea Democracy Foundation, and projects to be investigated include those involved in South-North Korean economic cooperation, the development of multipurpose helicopters and a plan calling for the construction of a nuclear-waste disposal site in Incheon.
The National Assembly asked the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) on November 10 to conduct special audits into the organizations and projects.
The special audits by a parliamentary request are the first since the law was revised to allow lawmakers to ask for special inspections of dubious national agencies and policies. The audits are also the first since Jeon Yoon-cul took office as the new head of the BAI.
The BAI said that after officially accepting the parliamentary request it began collecting related documents on the targeted organizations around the middle of this month. It is to carry out on-the-spot inspections starting December 8.
