The race between Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) and LG.Philips LCD to enlarge the size of thin-film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) products has been heating up.
SEC announced Thursday that it has succeeded in developing the world's largest LCD for high-density televisions, at 57 inches. The firm has been enlarging the size of its LCDs since August 2001, when it started producing 40-inch LCDs.
Market analysts said that SEC's announcement of its development of the 57-inch LCD was in part an ego-boosting measure, as the firm¡¯s rival, LG.Philips, unveiled last month what was then the world's largest, 55-inch, LCD.
When releasing its 55-inch product, LG.Philips said it broke Samsung's record, for a 54-inch LCD, in about 10 months.
