Samsung Electronics has climbed to the top of the global market for flash memory chips, achieving a dominant market share. The Korean electronics giant is the world's largest producer of DRAM memory chips.
iSupplier, a market-research Web site, reported Friday that Samsung Electronics's sales of flash memory products reached US$615 million for the third quarter of this year, up 50 percent from the same quarter last year, accounting for a global market share of 20 percent.
Toshiba ranked second with US$532 million is sales, for a global market share of 17.3 percent, the site said. Toshiba was followed by FASL LLC, a joint venture between AMD and Fijitsu, with US$424 million in sales and a 13.8 percent market share.
Intel made US$416 million in sales, for the fourth-largest share of 13.5 percent, followed by Sharp's 10.4 percent market share on US$318 million sales, the site said.
