Sorrows of a Slugger's Wife
DAEGU - My heart breaks when I see him turn his back after not hitting a home run. I don¡¯t think fans know how sorry he feels.¡±

This week feels like a year for Lee Song-jeong, 21, the wife of baseball player Lee Seung-yeop, as she, too, waits for her husband to break the home run record for Asian professional baseball.

Since her husband¡¯s game against the SK Wyverns on Sunday, the wife Lee has gone to four of the husband Lee's games, watching him from the stands. ¡°Frankly, I¡¯m more nervous. I would watch the game from TV at home, but I came to the stadium because I thought cheering here would boost his morale."

When she married the star 21 months ago, Lee didn¡¯t know a thing about baseball. But now she is a passionate fan, and gobbles up the baseball-related articles in the morning paper every day.

Her husband can't really rest comfortably and home now, with all the hubbub about the record, she said. ¡°I browse through cookbooks whenever I have the time and research new dishes. When he finishes his last game and comes home, I will cook samgyetang (a kind of chicken soup) to invigorate him.¡±

A fashion model in high school and now a sophomore studying acting at Chung-ang University, Ms. Lee has recently drawn more fans. She has become more popular these days by showing up at the stadium.

On Sept. 25, an Internet community attached to the portal website Daum called "Pretty Lee Song-jeong Café" was opened at cafe.daum.net/leesj1004, and in only seven days it had drawn 2,400 members. She was also caught by the camera on NHK while cheering at the stadium and her face was broadcasted internationally. (Choi Hyoung-suk, cogito@chosun.com )
