The President's Public Information office will no longer reply to any requests by the Dong-A Ilbo for an interview, senior secretary Lee Byung-wan said Sunday. He said the decision was made following a recent news article by the paper, which suggested that first lady Kwon Yang-sook had illegally purchased land.
Lee emphasized that the article, published in May, should not have been on the front page or on the third page, since the news was that the land purchase had been omitted from a required disclosure of President Roh Moo-hyun¡¯s assets. Lee also said that Cheong Wa Dae would take legal action against the Dong-A Ilbo.
The Dong-A Ilbo said it was the press had the right to plan the layout of articles, and that the article in question was written with specific sources asking for a closer examination into the case, not drawing any definite conclusions of an illegal acquirement.
