Government on Record-Setting Gripe Pace
The government has filed 96 complaints against media organizations since the inauguration of President Roh Moo-hyun last February, an opposition lawmaker pointed out Monday. The figure is a big jump on the 27 complaints made by the Kim Young-sam administration and the 118 made by the Kim Dae-jung administration during their five-year terms.

The lawmaker Ko Heung-kil of the main opposition Grand National Party, a member of the National Assembly¡¯s culture and tourism committee, determined the figure based on data he obtained from the Press Arbitration Commission for parliamentary inspections of the government.

¡°Of all the complaints filed, 43 were resolved by mutual consent and seven by the commission¡¯s arbitration rulings," Ko said. "Nine cases did not fulfill the conditions for arbitration, one was dismissed by the commission, 34 canceled by the plaintiff and two are still pending.¡±

By media organization, the Chosun Ilbo was targeted the most by complaints by being involved in 12 cases, followed by the Segye Times with eight and the Dong-a Ilbo and the Munhwa Ilbo six each. The Hankook Ilbo and the JoongAng Ilbo had four each. The only broadcasting company targeted was the Korean Broadcasting System, with three cases.

By government agency, the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae filed the most complaints, with 17. Next came the Ministry of Finance and Economy with 11, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy with eight and the Ministry of Health and Welfare with six.
