The closing ceremony for the 2003 Summer Universiade was held Sunday night in Daegu, with the athletes promising to meet again in Izmir, Turkey in 2005. About 7,000 athletes from 174 countries participated in the Daegu games, making them the largest Universiade in history.
The South Korean team took third in the medals standings with 25 golds, 11 silvers and 15 bronzes. The Chinese team ranked was first, with 41 golds, 27 silvers and 13 bronzes. The Russian team was second with 26 golds, 22 silvers and 34 bronzes.
The North Korean team finished strong, as on Saturday its women's soccer team won a gold medal by beating Japan 3-0 and its gymnast Kim Young-sil took another in heavy gymnastics. The North Koreans finished with three golds, seven silvers and three bronzes.
