Lawmakers Rail Against Roh's Press Policies
The president and his administration have continued to step up their "unprincipled" offensive against critical news publishers, the main opposition Grand National Party's special committee on the press said Monday. It will stand up against the press policies of the administration, the committee added.

The committee pointed out that the Government Information Service had openly and politically supported the president and the administration instead of pursuing the general national interest, even though it is a governmental organization run by the people's tax money. The organization's office, which is in charge of dealing with news companies, has worked in a leading role to weaken conservative news publishers, the committee said.

The committee said that it would strengthen the monitoring of wire service providers that broadcast "unfair and ruling party-favoring" reports and hold a hearing to resolve the problems of the wire services in mid-September. Representative Ko Heung-kil said the committee will prepare a tax policy to nurture regional news publishers. (Heo Yong-bum, heo@chosun.com )
