The Grand National Party spokesman Park Jong-hee said Wednesday that Hwang Jang-yop, former secretary of the North Korean Workers Party and the highest-ranking official to ever defect from the country, should be allowed to visit the United States. Park said Hwang's visit would improve South Korea-U.S. relations and serve to adjust inter-Korean relations.
To date, Hwang has been barred from traveling to the United States, ostensibly because of security concerns. The real reason for the ban, Park said, was that the Kim Dae-jung administration wanted to avoid upsetting Pyongyang. Park said the current government should respect Hwang's freedom.
