U.S. Cuts Deal With China Over Iraq
China has struck a secret deal with Washington regarding the Iraq and North Korea issues, said sources close to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. China promised to refrain from exercising its veto power in the United Nations Security Council if a new resolution is called to bring about military action in Iraq, in return for Washington's pledge to refrain from a preemptive military strike on North Korea, they said.

Top ministry officials discussed the Iraqi issue with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell during his visit to Asia late last month. The Chinese stressed that the North Korea's nuclear issue was of greater importance to Beijing than the Iraq issue, the sources said, adding that Beijing was planning to relay the details of the deal to Pyeongyang in an effort to restart U.S.-North Korea talks.
