Korean scientists have successfully produced mice that have human stem cells inserted in their embryos.
Researchers at Seoul's Maria Infertility Hospital said Wednesday they conducted the experiment to observe how human stem cells react in animal bodies, so as to apply the findings to cure human diseases.
In this highly controversial experiment, scientists added human stem cells to four-day-old fertilized mice eggs and then inserted them into a surrogate mouse's womb. The process had previously been attempted several times elsewhere around the world, but the Korean scientists' feat two weeks ago marked its first success.
A pending law at the National Assembly forbids the blending of cells between humans and different species.
