President-elect Gets Bodyguards

For the next two months until February 25, Roh Moo-hyun will receive almost the same level of treatment as the incumbent president, as has been customary for previous president-elects. The president's office dispatched some 30 bodyguards and policemen on Friday, to escort the president-elect and his family 24-hours a day.

A special committee will also be formed next Tuesday at a Cabinet meeting, to prepare for the transfer of the top office. Once the committee is formed, Roh will be notified of administrative affairs in the different government agencies for the remainder of the current administration, but will not be allowed to participate in decision-making. He can however make agreements with the incumbent leader.

In addition, if Roh wishes to make official visits abroad to the United States, among others, he will receive similar protocol as the president of the country, a possible visit for which the Foreign Affairs Ministry said is preparing.

The privileges also include a bulletproof car provided for the incoming leader's protection, and furthermore, Roh can choose to either stay in his own residence until the official inauguration, or move into a temporary home provided by the government.
