Chung Mong-joon Issues an Apology

Chung Mong-joon, the National Alliance 21 (NA21) leader, who withdrew support for Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) candidate and now President-elect Roh Moo-hyun, apologized to the people Friday. The statement, which was read by Chung in front of NA 21 headquarters in Yeouido, said, "I apologize to President-elect Roh and the Korea people for my thoughtless decision made during the last part of the presidential campaign." He went on to say, "I hope President-elect Roh becomes a successful president and in my future political actions, I will act in accordance to the people's and party members' will." Chung left as soon as he finished reading the statement.

NA 21 spokesperson Kim Haeng said, "Although there is talk of political retirement, at this point, we can say that NA 21 leader Chung will follow the will of the people."

Some NA21 members are known to want to return to the MDP and party executives all resigned on Friday. In relation to this, MDP Spokesperson Lee Nak-yon said, "Although we received NA 21 leader ChungĄ¯s flowers early in the morning, President-elect Roh made no comment."
