The nation's three major presidential hopefuls will be locked in a fierce battle on television once again, Tuesday, this time focusing on the Korean economy and science-technology. The second of a three-part TV debate, following the previous round held last Tuesday comes just nine days ahead of the December 19 presidential vote. The two-hour three-way forum, to be broadcast live from 8:00pm by three major television networks, is widely expected to affect the undecided in how they make their final choice.
Under two key subjects, policies on big conglomerates and trade liberalization, the Grand National Party's Lee Hoi-chang plans to highlight policies on creating a free yet transparent business climate. He will also try to reach out to the underprivileged people, promising to provide 2.3 million new houses and create 2.5 million new jobs.
Main rival Roh Moo-hyun of the pro-government Millennium Democratic Party meanwhile will share his economic philosophy, stressing a balance between growth and distribution under the principles of a market economy.
And Democratic Labor Party candidate Kwon Young-ghil will present a progressive policy to break up conglomerates and boost workers' participation in management. The third and last debate, focusing on social, cultural, women's, and media issues will be held next Monday.
