Grand National Party Presidential Election Campaign Manager Shin Kyung-shik said Thursday the party was now assured of dominance in Busan and Gyeongnam Province after early jitters, and was upbeat about Chungcheong provinces. Responding to this his Millennium Democratic Party counterpart, Lee Hae-chan admitted to a stalemate in Busan, Gyeongnam and Ulsan, but said support for Roh Moo-hyun in the metropolitan area was increasing.
Staff from both camps acknowledged, however, that there were frequent changes in support depending on the timing and methodology of surveys.
Meanwhile, slandering by both parties continued with GNP Floor-leader Lee Kyu-taek saying that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries had issued false press releases concerning the so-called Donga Construction "treasure ship," when Roh was minister, causing hundreds of billions of won in losses to small investors by artificially boosting the company's stock price.
MDP Deputy-spokesman Kim Man-su said decisions regarding the ship were taken 14 months before Roh took office.
Lee Hae-chan, head of the MDP Planning Committee commented there were rumors that the father of GNP presidential candidate Lee Hoi-chang amassed a huge amount of assets under Japanese colonial rule.
The opposition party's legal adviser Seo Jeong-woo said Lee's father left assets of W400 million and he would file a posthumous defamation suit against Lee Hae-chan.
