GNP Files Slander Suit Against Roh and Chung

The Grand National Party filed a complaint with the National Election Commission, claiming that the Millennium Democratic Party and National Alliance 21 presidential candidates Roh Moo-hyun and Chung Mong-joon slandered Grand National Party presidential hopeful Lee Hoi-chang with false representation during a recent televised debate.

In the letter of complaint the GNP said the two candidates circulated slander and false representation about Lee during the debate, and took issue in particular with Chung who alleged the GNP set up the news conference held in Japan with Lee Ik-chi, the former Chairman of Hyundai Electronics (Hynix) regarding the company's stock price manipulation.

GNP spokesman Nam Kyung-pil said in a statement because the NEC is primarily responsible for allowing the two candidates to make an illegal election campaign, which was fully predicted, for political considerations and demanded the commission director Yoo Ji-dam resign immediately.
