A Korea Gallup and Chosun Ilbo poll conducted right after the TV debate between candidates Roh Mu-hyun of the Millennium Democratic Party and Chung Mong-joon of the National Alliance 21, Friday showed Roh (42.4 percent) had a slight edge over Chung (41 percent) within the sample error as the most favored candidate to challenge the Grand National Party's Lee Hoi-chang. A survey with the same questions excluding Lee's supporters showed Chung leading by 39.9 percent to 37 percent. Roh was favored over Chung by 46.6 percent to 37.1 percent in a Gallup poll conducted on November 16.
Some 76.1 percent of respondents replied they watched the two-hour TV debate and 33.1 percent of them said Chung did better than Roh (28.4 percent).
The survey also showed either of the two candidates would beat Lee in the presidential election. Respondents said Chung would lead Lee by 43.1 percent to 36.4 percent and Roh by 42.4 percent to 37.4 percent respectively.
The telephone survey was conducted on 608 adults nationwide with a sample error of กพ3.9 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
Late afternoon surveys, however reversed the position of the two candidates giving Chung the lead, but also by the slenderest of margins at below one percent. In a run off against Lee, both Roh and Chung held a slight lead, but the latter was higher than the former; with Lee losing some of his former popularity.
