Rival Parties Consider Fielding Single Candidate
The Millennium Democratic Party and National Unity 21 started working Tuesday on negotiations for an open competition to elect either Roh Moo-hyun or Chung Mong-joon as a single presidential candidate.

Roh¡¯s chief secretary, Shin Gye-ryun, officially submitted a ¡°Proposal for a Single Candidate¡± to NU 21 through the director of the election committee. Shin said it was a proposal to field a single candidate through open competition, after holding televised discussions.

"If Chung accepts our proposal, we can get down to specifics through working level negotiations between the two sides," Roh said in a televised interview that day.

Jeong Dae-cheol, director of the committee to elect Roh, said the committee would organize a task force to work on the election of a single candidate for both parties.

Chung said in a press conference after a rally hat he would seriously consider the proposal, if the MDP should make it, while the NU 21 Organizing Committee¡¯s director, Lee Cheol, said the committee would select a channel of negotiation to assess all possible ways to make the choice.
