18 year-old Yuan Shuchi of Taipei shocked Kim Mun-joung of South Korea by an upset victory of 110-104 in the 2002 Busan Asian Games archery final at Gangseo Archery Field Tuesday. The win was a shock for the South Korean archery team, which has won every gold medal at the three Asiads since 1990, the womanĄŻs single in particular sweeping the board since the 1986 Seoul to 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.
In the final match, Kim was expecting a reverse in the ninth out of 12th at the moment she was being edged out by 82-84, but the first one of her last three shots ended up a six, throwing away her chance to chase the young Taiwanese girl.
The new Asia Champion Yuan Shuchi showed her mettle in the semi-final by beating out Yoon Mi-jin who had two golds in the 2000 Sydney Olympics by 113-106 and finally presented the first gold medal to her country, with a strong final match.
Born in Nantow Hsien, Taiwan, the second-year high school girl student has no outstanding record in international tournaments, except first place in the Asiad warm-up match participated in by five nations held in Gangseo in July. She has also won W70 million in prize money.
