The 10-day countdown has begun as of this Thursday for the Busan Asiad, which will go down in history as the biggest of its kind inviting all 43 members of the regional sporting event from Afghanistan to North Korea. Ahead of the grand opening ceremony slated for September 29 the southeastern port city swung open its doors to the Athletes' Village, which waits to accommodate 10,000 participants.
On September 23, the first batch of athletes will arrive and check in to the village, which is built as a deluxe apartment complex. The village can accommodate up to 14,000 athletes in 20 different buildings.
Set in a clean and green environment organizers have tried hard to create a comfortable and relaxing environment for athletes to stay, as part of plans to help participants optimally prepare for the games.
The Village is a place that offers more than just beds and meals for its tenants, having a wide range of recreational and entertainment facilities to provide a friendly and multicultural environment for athletes to enjoy. The complex is divided into three zones: Residential, International, and Common. In the "R" zone there are apartment buildings and a dining hall; the "I" zone is where facilities such as a movie theater, video game arcade, bank and fitness center among others, are located; while the "C" zone comprises all the different administration offices related to the games management.
The Asian Games is not only about competing, it also means sharing and making new friends while the athletes are here, living together. That's what makes the Athletes Village meaningful and important.
During the games, the village will be home to more than 10,000 athletes, after which it will house participants taking part in the FESPIC games that's for the disabled. When all that's over, the apartment units will be up for sale to the public and it will be transformed into a residential space for Busan citizens.
