French Carrefour Manager Indicted

The Seoul District Prosecutor¡¯s Uijongbu Office on Friday indicted 33 year-old French Guillaume Bouvet, the Ilsan branch manager of the multinational distribution group Carrefour, without detention on a charge of violating the Labor Union Law.

The prosecution stated that Bouvet spurned the promotion proposals of two labor union workers in December 2000. Bouvet claimed that he should not have approved the proposal, as the two belonged to a labor union and he had ordered managers not to recommend any union members for promotion.

According to the prosecution, Bouvet¡¯s policy was to give workers a pay raise only if they quit the union, and to not promote union members.

The prosecution also said that Bouvet was also being charged with the slander of union members. He attached a poster that read, ¡°The unlawful small minority destroys the organization with its illegal activities,¡± when union workers were rallied in front of Carrefour Ilsan building in February.
