Busan Haeundae Maritime Police and the Ministry of Labor's office in Dongrae announced Monday they were investigating Poongsan CorporationĄ¯s munitions plant there on suspicion the company concealed an explosion. The explosion apparently occurred in an M16 ammunition storage room last Friday at 8:40am and seriously injured two staff on duty, including a 42 year-old man identified as Kim.
PoongsanĄ¯s Dongrae plant, as a military facility grade A, is supposed to notify the police or military headquarters of any accident, including an explosion. The police and labor office dispatched an investigation team to the factory and the hospital the wounded people were in to launch an intensive investigation into the cause of the explosion and safety management in the workplace.
Aside from the August 23 accident, PoongsanĄ¯s Dongrae plant had an explosion that killed three workers and damaged nearby residences on July 5. With regard to this incident, the plant also did not report it to related organizations and hospitalized wounded people not in an ambulance, but in a common vehicle to conceal the accident.
Meanwhile, Poongsan Corporation suspended production of M16 ammunition until the cause of the accident is discovered.
