Court Allows Transsexual to Change Legal Gender Status

In a landmark ruling, a local court has accepted the application of a male-to-female transsexual, who sought to have her gender description on the family register changed. Judge Ko Jong-ju of the Busan District Court ruled Wednesday the 30-year-old applicant can have her legal status altered from male to female, since the transsexual meets both medical and legal requirements, and has the right to pursue happiness and live in dignity as guaranteed by the Constitution. The applicant, identified by her last name Yoon, underwent a sex change in 1999 and has since been suffering from an identity crisis.
