A combined total of some 22-million Koreans are tallied to have poured out onto the streets nationwide, to support the national team during its seven World Cup matches. According to the National Police Agency, Monday, what started out as a turnout of 500,000 for Korea's match against Poland swelled to 770,000 for the match against the US, and then to nearly 2.8 million for the game against Portugal.
In the knockout round against Italy, that figure almost doubled to 4-point-2 million, and feverish soccer spirit prompted 5 million to hit the streets for Korea's quarterfinal against Spain and 6.5 million for the semifinal against Germany. But the momentum did see a letdown, with Korea's third-place playoff against Turkey attracting a nationwide turnout of 2.1 million.
