North Korea sent a congratulatory note to Korean Football Association chair Chung Mong-jun on the successful hosting of the 2002 World Cup, Monday, despite the West Sea naval clash, which the North blamed on South Korea. The letter was sent through Panmunjeom from Lee Kwang Keun, chairman of the Chosun Football Association.
Lee congratulated the entry of Korea's soccer team into the semifinals saying, "If our people put together out strength and wisdom, I am convicted that the country can achieve independent unification. We express our anticipation that you (Chung Mong-jun) will contribute greatly to the joining of both nation's strengths."
Previously, North Korea's Pyongyang Broadcasting Station had broadcast a congratulatory letter in the name of chairman Lee on the night of June 30.
