Fighting for third place in the World Cup, Korea and Turkey unleashed a first half goal fest in the first half leaving the Turks ahead 3:1, before the Europeans went on to win 3:2 after full time. The first goal came in the first minute of play when Hong Myung-bo misplayed a back pass which found Hakan Sukur, who slotted the ball past Lee Woon-jae. Korea came straight back, but a shot from Lee Eul-yong went well wide of the mark. However, he made good in the ninth minute with a curving left foot free kick from just outside the area, which gave Rustu Recber no chance, to level the score.
Just four minutes later Turkey were back in the lead after deft team work between Sukur and Ilhan Mansiz drew Lee off his line to allow Mansiz to shoot into an open net. The Koreans came back fighting with Ahn Jung-hwan having two shots, the latter winning the first of Five consecutive corners, which Korea failed to capitalize on.
Turkey immediately counterattacked and again play by Sukur and Mansiz produced a result as they wrong footed the defense to allow the latter to gain his second goal and give Turkey a 3:1 lead. The Turks continued to dominate the period with Sukur looking dangerous and having several chances to increase the lead, although Korea came closest when Ahn Jung-hwan netted the ball, but was ruled offside.
Hakan Unsal came on for Emre Belozoglu as the half drew to a close with shots from Sukur and Seol Ki-hyeon.
The second half started with Kim Tae-young coming on for Hong, as Korea went all out in search of goals. Song Chong-kuk came close in the 53rd minute with a hard left foot drive that just skimmed over the bar, followed by Lee Eul-yong who launched a drive into Recber's chest.
In the 65th minute Recber charged out for a cross, but collided with Alpay Ozalam leaving the ball to Park Ji-sung, before managing to recover it as Park lined up to shoot. Cha Du-ri then came on for Lee Eul-yong and immediately started to cause Turkey problems on the right, narrowly missing with a flicked header. Seol Ki-hyeon had a couple of shots before being substituted by Choi Tae-uk as Team Korea strove for a score, with shots from Ahn. Lee Young-pyo and Cha.
Recber was forced to make two diving saves from shots on goal by Lee Chung-soo and Cha, before Korea finally got one back with a shot from Song that clipped a defender as is spun into the far corner, just before the whistle for full time sounded.
