The Turkish national team arrived in Daegu, South Korea, Thursday, prior to its 2002 World Cup third place match against the co-hosts on June 29. The team headed straight for their hotel in Suseong-gu, Daegu, about 10 minutes from the stadium after arriving to unload their luggage. The Turks took a rest after having a light western buffet at the hotel. At the airport, some 150 people, including 60 members of athletic associations waited in line to welcome the Turks.
Sophomore Kwon Oh-hyeon at Pusan University of Foreign Studies who is studying Turkish, waved a placard written in Turkish reading "Welcome to South Korea," and provided by the nation's culture center in Seoul. Even though players left the airport, some people involved in the Turkish Football Association thanked the locals in Korean.
Some Turkish people were also found at the airport; a Turkish graduate student named Patie majoring in global trade at Pusan University's Foreign Languages Department said he came wishing his team will beat South Korea, but wouldn't mind if the result went to Korea.
