The government is planning to build a large structure representing South Korea, similar to France's Eiffel Tower as part of its post World Cup plans, and to propose renewing inter-Korean matches and starting a South Korea-China-Japan professional soccer league.
In a Cheong Wa Dae meeting with economic ministers chaired by President Kim Dae-jung Wednesday, government ministers detailed their post cup measures. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism proposed establishing six new professional football clubs by 2005, focusing on host cities such as Seoul, Daegu, Incheon, Gwangju and Seogwipo, and a holding a national championship in commemoration of the 2002 World Cup.
Alongside, it suggested large discount stores, drive-in cinemas and culture facilities be placed in and around World Cup stadiums, and the setting up of lodging complexes with a capacity of up to 8,000 guestrooms by 2010.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said it will try to boost export prices by 10% to make the most of an upgraded international image and will map out a high-end strategy by September by item and type of business.
The Ministry of Information and Communication is planning to discuss ways to expand exports, while surveying the current export market situation for IT industries by organizing a committee in July to market them overseas in association with the private sector.
MOIC has also decided to expand individualized exports by country and item after selecting top 10 promising IT export items. Planning and managing director Byon Jae-il said he would get satellite broadcasters to add exclusive HDTV channels in the fourth quarter after producing and replaying professional baseball games in association with TV stations and digital appliance companies in the third quarter.
The Ministry of Finance and Economy mapped out the plan to dispatch a large-scale business delegation to Europe, America and Asia in the last half of the year, and will hold a seminar on the Korean Economy with the private and public sectors in England on July 3.
