The government is planning to vote in the National Assembly tomorrow the decision to designate July 1, a day after the 2002 World Cup final and closing ceremony, as a national holiday for celebrating the successful hosting of the games and South Korea's qualifying for the semifinals for the first time in 48 years, regardless of whether the national soccer team advances to the final.
It will also host a Grand Culture Festival in celebration in front of either City Hall Plaza the Sangam World Cup Stadium, or the Peace Park in front of it on the evening of July 2, attended by the team players and including Guus Hiddink.
Cheong Wa Dae Policy Planning Advisor Kim Jin-pyo said originally the holiday was only going to be celebrated if Korea advanced to the final, but it was decided to celebrate its performance anyway.
