North Korea's Central Broadcasting Station aired an edited version of the 2002 World Cup soccer match between South Korea and Italy held in Daejeon June 18, Sunday night from 10:00pm to 11:00pm, marking its first broadcast of a South Korean match since the opening of event on May 31.
The station said the national team had no win in five consecutive appearances since 1986 after 1954, when the team debuted on the soccer stage, but added South Korean players were highly motivated in the 2002 World Cup after tying with the United States and beating Poland and Portugal.
NKCBS reported "the sending off of Italian captain Totti fir simulation was a correct decision," adding that Ahn Jung-hwan scored a golden goal in the second half of overtime.
However, it did not show the scene of red-clad supporters cheering for the team and the waving card section showing "Again 1966" in celebration of North Korea's victory over Italy. It reported, "The Italian team was a World Cup entrant in 1966 but we [North Korea] beat them."
