Turkey Ousts Senegal 1-0 to Advance to Semis
Turkey came out on top against a determined Senegal team 1-0 to advance to the semifinals of the World Cup on Saturday in Osaka, Japan.

Unlike the Korea-Spain match earlier in the day, in which both teams played with caution and emphasized ball possession, the match between Turkey and Senegal featured free-wheeling football throughout, with both teams coming out aggressive and generating quality scoring chances.

Turkey had what looked like the first goal of the game when mid-fielder Yildiray Basturk headed a ball past Senegal goalkeeper Tony Sylva, only to see Senegal defender Omar Daf slide-kick the ball out of play just before it rolled over the goal line.

With neither team scoring in regular time, the match went into overtime, where Turkey forward Ilhan Mansiz scored the Golden Goal on a half-volley inside the penalty area that caught the far left of the net, at the 94-minute mark.

Senegal, however, did its continent proud as it was the first African team to ever advance into the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Turkey next takes on Brazil in the semifinal match on June 26. (Glen Choi, glen@chosun.com )
