The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is conducting an assessment process as the government has decided to award citations to those who have contributed to the World Cup, including players and coaching staff.
The government will recognize Team Korea¡¯s distinguished service to the country for creating national unity and elevating the brand image of the country, as it proceeds to the semi-final round for the first time in history.
Especially, head coach Guus Hiddink and the players are being considered for Cheongryung Order, the highest honor in sports, and Korea World Cup Organizing Committee, government officials who were involved in the event, police, emergency rescue squads, organizers of the opening event, military units, and official World Cup sponsors¡¯ employees are also eligible for recognition. Hiddink will be the first foreigner to receive the Cheongryung Order, if the decision is made.
In addition, the leaders of the Red Devil supporter group, who initiated enthusiastic, yet orderly, street cheering for millions, will be awarded appropriate honors, for imprinting a positive image of the country, and supporter groups for other teams playing in Korea will also be included.
A government official said Saturday that if the World Cup ends without any safety-related accident by June 30, those who were involved in the games will receive medals, and the MOCT is currently reviewing the achievements.
