It seems the deeper this year's World Cup games go, the more twists and surprises they have in store. The United States defeated Mexico 2-0 in Jeonju, Korea on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1930.
Coming off an embarrassing loss to Poland in its final Group C match last week, the United States rebounded nicely against Mexico by coming out loose and confident, playing an overall aggressive game that was too much for the Mexicans to handle.
US forward Brain McBride got the team going when he scored at the 8-minute mark on a bee-line rocket just outside the penalty area that caught the far left corner of the goal. Landon Donovan then put in a header off a kick from the side after outrunning his opponent at the 65-minute mark that sealed the match for the United States.
The United States now has the daunting task of playing against Germany in the quarterfinals on Friday.
