Senegal continued their dream run in the 2002 World Cup, Sunday, advancing to the quarterfinals at the expense of Sweden, whom they beat with a "golden goal" in the first period of extra time 2:1. The Swedes started of quicker with a three minute Tobias Linderoth shot testing Tony Syylva and nearly went ahead when Olof Mellberg was on target only for the goalkeeper to stop it with his foot, while the rebound was sent wide. Senegal responded with a Pape Thiaw shot, which sailed over the bar.
Sweden were first on the scorecard when an unmarked Henrik Larsen headed in a corner in the 11th minute. Senegal made repeated attempts to get even launching a wave of attacks, and finally broke through the Swedish defense in the 37th minute when Henri Camara controlled a pass with his chest and fired the ball past Magnus Hedman. The Swedes nearly took the lead in the dying moments of the half with an Anders Svensson free kick, but Sylva, diving to his left kept the score 1:1.
Sweden came out aggressively in the second half and shots from Svensson and Marcus Allback tested Sylva. The seesawing second period saw both sides coming close, but neither getting the upper hand and the game closed out a draw. In the first half of extra time a back heel from Thiaw found Camara who hammered the ball home of Hedman's post to win the game. Senegal face either Turkey or Japan in the quarterfinals.
