Kim Congratulates National Soccer Team
After the Korean national team defeated Portugal 1-0 and advanced to the second round of the World Cup for the first time ever, President Kim Dae-jung congratulated the young players for their brave performance and said the world was amazed at their accomplishment.

Cheong Wa Dae spokeswoman Park Sun-sook also said, "the Korean team and people achieved a historical victory by coming together and I would also like to extend my congratulations to the 2002 World Cup co-hosts Japan for advancing to the second round as well."

Even though some 2.7 million people joined the cheering rallies on the streets, they were on their best behavior as there were no mishaps, Park said, adding that the police did a great job of maintaining the peace on the streets.

Park also said President Kim and the government would do their utmost to ensure a successful finish to the World Cup, urging the tournament's volunteers, military, police and related civil servants to keep working hard.
