Poland upset the United States 3-1 in Daejeon, Korea on Friday, but the American side still managed to advance to the next round as Korea defeated Portugal the same day.
With the Red Devils fans rowdily cheering on the Polish side, as a win by them would have sealed a spot for Korea in the Round of 16 for the first time ever, Poland came out flying with two quick goals.
Emmanuel Olisadebe and Pawel Kryszalowicz scored at the 3- and 5-minute marks, respectively, for a 2-0 lead, and the Red Devils, who were closely watching both the Korea-Portugal and Poland-US matches, could sense history in the making.
In the second half, Poland's Marcin Zewlakow scored to make it 3-0 at the 66th minute and the celebrations were on. The United States got a goal by Landon Donavon late in the game to break Polish goalie Jerzy Dudek's bid for a shutout.
The United States next face Mexico on June 17, while Korea has the daunting task of having to face Italy on June 18 in Daejeon.
