Mexico, easily outplaying Italy had to be content with a 1:1 draw Thursday after a late equalizer by Alessandro Del Piero rescued the Italians from an early World Cup exit.
Jared Borgetti gave the Mexicans the lead, heading in a neatly delivered pass by Cuautemoc Blanco chip into the box in the 34th minute, as the Latin Americans totally outclassed the Europeans. Their dominance, however, could not translate into goals and they ended the half with a 1:0 lead.
The second half began the same as the first with a seemingly dispirited Italy being outplayed. Again though this did not produce any finishes and Mexico seemed to be settling for a single goal up, when five minutes from time, Del Piero, brought on as a substitute, got a Hail Mary goal for Italy heading home from close range and giving them second place in Group G.
Mexico now face the second placed Team from Group D, while Italy meet the winners.
