England made it to the second round of the World Cup Wednesday with a 0:0 draw with the already eliminated Nigeria in a lack luster display that saw them unable to find the net despite dominating most of the match. A team that seemed to be coasting, the English were nearly caught by fast counter-attacks by the Nigerians as they made some sloppy defending errors.
The team came second in Group F behind Sweden, who eliminated favorites Argentina, even on points and goal differences but lagging in goals scored and will meet Denmark on Saturday.
The English came closest to scoring with a Paul Scholes' shot that was tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, and bounced out.
In the second period a lackadaisical pass by Sol Campbell was intercepted by Julius Aghahowa, but luckily cover stopped the scoring chance.
Substitute Teddy Sheringham had the best chance of the half but launched his shot over the bar from less than 10-meters out, as England hung on for the draw.
