Senegal Hang on to 3:3 Tie for Place in Second Round

Senegal made it to the second round of the World Cup Tuesday, in their first appearance in the event, with a nail biting 3:3 tie against Uruguay, which saw the South Americans fight back from being 3:0 down at the half. Needing only a draw to qualify, Senegal opened the scoring after a dubious penalty in the 20th minute. El Hadji Diouf latched on to a mistimed back pass by Paolo Montero and pushed it past Sebastian Carini, but then crashed over the top of the sliding goalkeeper without appearing to make contact. However, Dutch referee Jan Wegereef ruled the challenge as a foul and Khalilou Fadiga converted from the spot.

The African side scored two more before the break, both from Pape Bouba Diop; the first six minutes later when he side footed in a cross from Henri Camara and his second in the 38th minute when he slotted in another Camara cross off the cross bar.

Uruguay, knowing they had to win, came out fighting in the second period and in a remarkable come from behind nearly achieved it, with goals by Richard Morales, Diego Forlan and a penalty in the 88th minute by Alvaro Recoba, tying the game 3:3. However, in injury time Morales headed wide in front of an open net to seal the team's fate as Senegal hung on for the draw.

Senegal finished second in Group A with five points behind Denmark who beat France 2:0 the same day.
