Soccer Chants Spice up World Cup Atmosphere
The chants "Dae-Han-Min-Guk" and "Go Korea" used by the Red Devils, the official supporters club of the national team is being used by tens of thousands of red shirted South Koreans rallying behind Korea in the 2002 FIFA Korea Japan World Cup soccer showdown. With the possibility of the team reaching the second round rising the chant is heard from every walk of life from elementary school children, university students to wage earners.

The rhythms of the chants are not new; the "Dae-Han-Min-Guk" pattern originated from the phrase "Su-Won- Sam-Sung" used by supporters of professional club Suwon Samsung, while the "Go Korea" rhythm comes from SK supporters who chanted "Oh Bucheon."

They materialized at the 1998 World Cup held in France because the Red Devils are an association of supporters of professional domestic teams and used the familiar rhythms. Chanting is part of soccer rituals and contributes to the dynamics of a live game's atmosphere; some are new, but many originate overseas.
