The United States pulled off a stunning upset victory over heavily favored Portugal, 3:2 in Suwon, Wednesday night after launching a non-stop series of attacks in the first half, which they dominated, and a sterling rear guard action in the second to thwart a Portuguese comeback. The win is seen as the team's greatest victory since they beat England 1:0 52 years ago.
The US opened with a blistering attack that netted its three goals in the first 36 minutes of play, leaving the Portuguese shell-shocked. The goals came from midfielders John O'Brien after just four minutes, followed by Landon Donovan whose floating cross was deflected in by Jorge Costa in the 30th minute. Striker Brian McBride made it three six minutes later.
The European soccer giant battled back and scored its first goal off a corner just three minutes after the restart with Beto Severo knocking the ball in, but Portugal had to end the half 3:1 down with a lot to do.
In the second half adamant defending kept the Portuguese at bay until the 26th minute of play when Jeff Agoos flung himself at a dangerous cross from the left, only to see the ball rocket into his own net, bringing the difference to a solitary goal. However, the US held firm and deservedly hung on for the upset victory against the Group D favorites.
The US are now set up to play Korea, which saw its first World Cup victory over Poland, 2:0 the day before on June 10.
