Koreans Rally Behind Turkey
Among the audience at the Munsu stadium in Ulsan on June 3, where Brazil played Turkey, some 600 South Korean supporters of the Turkish team cheered enthusiastically along with some 500 Turkish supporters.

The South Korean supporter group is comprised of 500 Ulsan citizens and 100 Busan/Ulsan members of an Internet support group for Turkey that was established initially out of gratitude for Turkey's participation in the Korean War (1950-53).

The supporters from Ulsan are mostly entrepreneurs and wage earners in their 30s and 40s and college students in their 20s. These supporters received cheers from the Turkish supporting squad when they prepared a jumbo Turkish national flag (10m wide and 8m long) and came to the game wearing yellow T-shirts that bore the Turkish flag.

As well, some 10 Turkish veterans of the Korean War who watched the match at the invitation of Hyundai Motor were overcome with emotion during the match.

Also, some 100 from Busan and Ulsan out of the 400 members of the "Internet Turkey Supporters" group, composed in March, visited the stadium.

Member Ko Seok-jung said that, while he traveled to Turkey two years ago, he met with veterans of the Korean War and decided to root for the Turks after hearing their stories about how they risked their lives. The rest of the Internet supporters, about 200, who did not attend the game, cheered separately in front of a jumbo video screen in Yeoiudo. (Kim Hak-chan, chani@chosun.com )
