If Denmark's coach Mort Olsen and assistant Michael Laudrup were dreaming of a repeat performance of 1986, when they were players in a 6:1 drubbing of Uruguay, they were rudely awoken by a Uruguay determined to take the game to the Danes, until Jon Tomassen scored his second goal to seal the game 2:1 for the Scandinavians seven minutes from time.
Tomasson hit a shot home from eight meters off a Jesper Gronkjaer center in the 45th minute to give Denmark a 1:0 lead going into the second half. However, straight from the kick-off of the second period Dario Rodriguez hammered in a left foot volley through Thomas Sorensen to tie the game. The rest of the half was tight with both sides searching out a winner, but neither able to finish until Tomassen, became the first multi-goal scorer of the World Cup, heading in a Martin Jorgensen cross off the underside of the bar.
The result leaves Denmark tied with Senegal at the top of Group A, both with three points, while France, who lost 1:0 to the African side in Friday's opener and Uruguay have no points. Denmark plays Senegal and Uruguay meet France on June 6.
