Starting, Tuesday, all passengers and luggage entering Incheon International Airport will undergo body searches and X-ray checks to ensure safety during the World Cup games from May 31 to June 30. Until now, customs officials only inspected suspicious people and their baggage.
Similar security measures are also being applied to the country's 10 World Cup stadiums as part of the government's anti-terrorism campaign during the month-long tournament. The National Police Administration on Monday deployed 20 sniffer dogs and three robots to safeguard the soccer stadiums from possible explosives.
Police say the 20 dogs, including Retrievers and German Shepherds, were specially selected in January for an intensive 12-week training course to detect bombs. They add, the three robots capable of detecting, searching, and removing any trace of explosives, are each being assigned to the special police squads in Seoul, Busan and South Jeolla Province to keep the World Cup terror-free.
In related news, police will enforce a ban on rallies and demonstrations within a 1km radius of World Cup stadiums and 600m from players' accommodations and practice grounds. In a labor related meeting, the government decided to designate the areas around the World Cup stadiums as "special security zones" to facilitate the move.
In addition police will limit one-man demonstrations to outside the security zones and arrest unionists attempting to breach them.
