With just 11 days to the kickoff of the FIFA World Cup Finals, a growing number of Korean businesses are feeling the World Cup effect. Cash registers are ringing up for home appliance makers, airline companies and rental car service providers, the top three industries that seem to be bearing the brunt of the World Cup bonanza. With growing numbers of soccer fans willing to reach into their pockets to watch World Cup matches with improved and more high-tech vision sales of digital and PDP or plasma display panel TV sets have jumped three times the norm.
In the airline industry, the nation's flagship carrier Korean Air says its American, Southeast Asian, Chinese and European routes are booked solid. And business is looking just as bustling for its rival Asiana Airlines. Korea's second carrier says its reservations for June have already exceeded 90%, growing by 10% from the same time last year.
The World Cup travel boom is also spelling business for major rental car companies, with reservations for industry leaders such as Avis, Rent-A-Car Korea and Korea Express nearly booked out for the entire month of June.
