Busan to Emerge as Center of Korean Sports

Some cities in the country are lucky to have been chosen as venues for the World Cup, but one city is doubling the excitement with two major international sporting events lined up for this year. Busan the nation's largest port city is getting ready for two major sporting events this year, the World Cup and the 14th Asian games. In doing so they are putting the finishing touches to its Asiad Stadium, completed in July of 2001, and seating around 56,000 fans.

The architecture of the stadium resembles Rome's Coliseum and the Pantheon and it took seven years to construct and with a price tag of over 227 billion won. What makes it so special is the roof construction and also the colors of the seats, the five colors of the Hanbok, Korea's traditional costume in the form of waves surrounding an ocean. Also the contours of the roof represent the movement of waves.

To show Busan's enthusiasm for all the countries with matches in their city, a group of soccer fans will fervently cheer for each nation. These supporters range from fans of star players from each country's squad or just regular citizens who want to show Busan's brotherly love.

The 14th Asian Games will be a great sporting festival for the 3.6 billion Asians and hosting the event within a three-month span of the World Cup is a challenge Busan is looking forward to.
