Domestic mobile phone users of the 011 or 017 service will be able to use the same handset and phone number in China, a communication service dubbed as automatic roaming, during the 2002 FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by Korea and Japan.
According to SK Telecom, the 011 service provider and the largest mobile firm in the country, the company and China Unicom, China's No. 2 mobile carrier, have signed an agreement to jointly offer CDMA-based automatic roaming and wireless Internet services between Korea and China for the whole period of the World Cup games, due to start at the end of May.
SK Telecom said that the automatic roaming service will begin in early May, covering seven major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou initially and most of the country later.
Calls from China to Korea on the mobile phones will cost W2,167 per minute and W517 within China, SK Telecom said.
